Key Takeaways

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the more amazing ways to gather traction and awareness for your business at literally no cost. But here's the thing, it doesn't work for everyone.

You will have to know how to apply the following Search Engine Optimization tactics in order to attract the right people to your website. Here are 5 tactic you can adopt today:

(1) Research about Malaysian's behaviour on Search Engine before writing
(2) Localise your content for Malaysia
(3) Plan your content around long tail keywords
(4) Get your article known in local community across different social media
(5) Make sure your article is indexed properly by Google Search Console and can be found

This article is written largely referencing the Malaysia business context. But really, these tactics can be used in your respective country as well.

The logic behind is simple, if you want to win local Search Engine Optimization game, you must know the game well first. In other words, if you want to attract Malaysian traffic to your website, first know how they behave around Search Engines.

What do they search for? How do they search for information they want? How often do they search for such matter? All these are data that would benefit you greatly so long you know how to use them.

One tool that you can use to extract such information is Google trends. According to Wikipedia, Google trend is a website by Google that analyzes the popularity of top search queries in Google Search across various regions and languages. The website uses graphs to compare the search volume of different queries over time.

Here’s what you can do on the website:
Using Google Trends to understand Malaysian behaviour
You can analyse what kind of keywords Malaysian use when searching on search engine
In event that you don’t know which keyword you should use for your next article, Google trends can provide you the answer. You don’t need to guess, Google will be able to tell you exactly which keywords are mainly used by Malaysian when it comes to a certain topic.

Mastering this tool itself gives you a head start in the Search Engine Optimization game already. Don’t forget to include this into your Search Engine Optimization tactic.

You may not know this, but Google and other search engine actually takes in account of your location when you make a search.

Try searching “Pizzahut”, which website comes up first? Is it pizzahut.com.my or pizzahut.com? The Malaysia website would definitely pop up first, because to search engine, the Malaysia Pizzahut is more relevant to you as you are in Malaysia.

Think about it, it makes sense right? If you’re ordering a pizza today from Pizzahut, which website would you order from? Of course you will choose the Pizzahut that operate in your city right? Simple logic.

But here’s the thing, the fact that the Malaysia version website shows up first doesn’t mean that it has a better SEO score than compared to the .com version. It simply mean that it’s more relevant to you.
Making sure that your content is relevant is key
Relevance is key if you want your content/ website to show up
The lesson here is that if you want your content to show within the Malaysian community and you want more Malaysian traffic, you have to make sure the content is relevant to them.

For example, if you’re writing an article on how to utilise Search Engine Optimization strategy to gather more attention for your business, try amending the title to “How to utilise Search Engine Optimization strategy to gather more attention for your business in Malaysia.” When you do this, search engine would know that your content is likely to be more relevant for Malaysian and this increases the odd of it showing up.

Long tail keyword is a blessing. What’s a long tail keyword you ask?

Long tail keyword is the study of search phrases that users would use when it comes to making a search on search engines. Here’s an example, if I’m looking to watch a movie in Kuala Lumpur, the national capital city of Malaysia, I’m more likely to search for “cinema showtime in Kuala Lumpur” instead of “cinema showtime”.

And that’s the usage of Long tail keyword. Because it’s usually longer in length as compared to a more general search term, it’s easier to rank your content/ website on such keyword. The reason behind is because the search traffic of a long tail keyword is definitely lower compared to a general search phrase.

And that equals to lower competition.
Long tail keyword equals to lower competition
Using long tail keywords will improve your SEO faster because competition is lower
How do you find long tail keyword? Just follow the following steps:

  1. First, head over to Google trends first to view which keyword is used by your audience when it comes to a certain topic. ( In this case, Malaysian)
  2. Secondly, head over to UberSuggest and punch the general term in. Don’t forget to switch the country of search to Malaysia as well
  3. Thirdly, switch over keyword ideas and check out what other format you can write about revolving your topic.
  4. Lastly, pick a format of the general term you’re trying to rank for, which comes in the format of long tail keyword. Longer length, enjoys lesser traffic but is so so much easier to rank on.
